Give your Laundry Room a JE Makeover

JE Blog Template (3).jpg

Did you know that the laundry room can be one of the most toxic rooms in your house?  Studies show that the average Laundry Room has higher concentrations of toxic chemicals, dust allergens, molds, and bacteria than any other area of the house.  This is especially potentially toxic to the body because our skin is the largest organ of the body, and quickly absorbs what is applied to it. What is in contact with the skin during the day (and night) more than our clothing, bedding, and towels?  In supporting your family with Healthy Skin and a Healthy Life, here are a few Laundry Room Makeover tips and ideas.

Laundry Soap

Choose a plant-based, non-toxic laundry soap with no added scents or fillers.  There are many great brands on the market now. Then add 2 drops of Jordan Essentials’ Resistance Essential Oil to each load.  Resistance adds a delightful clean fragrance, while adding the benefits of purifying both your laundry and the washing machine at the same time.

Clean your Washing Machine

Depending on how often you do laundry, you may want to clean your washing machine anywhere from once a week to once a month.  Mold and mildew can unknowingly build up in the crevices of your machine, contributing to illness and allergies. Run an empty load on your hottest water setting with ½ cup of baking soda, 1 quart of vinegar, and 5-7 drops of Jordan Essentials’ Resistance Essential Oil or Jordan Essentials’ Tea Tree Essential Oil.  Let the cycle run its full course, then wipe down the door, gaskets, drum, dispenser, and any other components that may need cleaned. If your washer is especially dirty or has a bad odor, run a second cycle on the hottest water setting with 2 cups of baking soda (no vinegar) and 2-3 drops of JE Resistance Essential Oil or JE Tea Tree Essential Oil.  Remember, mold and mildew grow in damp places, so leave the door of your washer open when it is not in use so the drum completely dries out between uses.

Fabric Softener

Fabric softener is one of the most toxic substances in your home.  Granted, those little white sheets sure smell good and can make your clothes smell nice, but they are made with over 12 toxic chemicals that are known to be carcinogenic, irritating, depressant, and neurotoxins.  During the drying cycle, tiny fibers from the dryer sheets get lodged in the fibers of your clothing, which then sit next to your skin… and absorbed into the bloodstream. Liquid softeners are no better. So, what do we do instead, since we are completely hooked on having our clothes come out soft and aromatic?  Try making your own!

Pour Epsom salt into a large glass or stainless steel bowl.  Add essential oils and stir well to combine. Store in a glass jar out of direct sunlight.

Use ½ cup for medium to large loads in the wash cycle at any temperature and ¼ cup for small loads.  Use Wool Dryer Balls in the dry cycle.

Keep Your Whites Nice and Bright without Harsh Chemicals

One easy way to keep your whites nice and bright is to add ½ cup of white vinegar and 4-6 drops of Tea Tree Essential Oil to your wash cycle.  This combination naturally brightens your whites. You can also make your own “bleach” that effectively whitens, deodorizes, and cleans.

A Few Other Laundry Tips

Add 2 drops of your favorite Essential Oil to the rinse cycle for added fragrance such as Orange, Peppermint, Lavender, Immune, Resistance, and Eucalyptus.

  1. Spritz sheets, towels, or other laundry with any of Jordan Essentials Essential Oil Sprays before using for additional fragrance and benefits.

  2. Turn cotton T-shirts, sweaters, delicates, or other clothing inside out to prevent pilling during washing.

  3. Pair up socks before washing and attach them together using safety pins, sock clips, or a laundry bag for easy pairing after washing.

  4. Throw a dry towel into the dryer with wet towels to save drying time and energy.

  5. Hang clothes or fold clothes immediately after dry cycle is complete to prevent wrinkling.
